It was crystal clear Xonor were in the building – with their self-advertised ‘goon squad’ in tail. An unwaveringly dedicated set of fans willing to sport full woollen balaclavas in Zürich’s humid mid-summer evening in some sort of Neo-militaristic act of support.

It was super cool to see – high intensity thrash, multiple pits, loud, aggressive, Swiss thrash metal core. Xonor seem to be intelligently building a fanbase through social media penetration, one anti-establishment single at a time. The St. Gallen quad are certainly working hard and whipping up an enthusiastic fanbase in the process.

It’s great to see young and enthusiastic local musicians putting their own spin on classic genres, and building highly engaged followings in the process.

Jungle Rot on the other hand, have really done it all. Since 1992 the Wisconsin death metal quad have been producing high-quality groove infused thrash for the masses. Navigating multiple line-up changes over their almost four decade onslaught, they’ve toured with the greats, signed to prestigious record labels, and even played the  70000 Tons of Metal cruise.

Werk 21 is basically a small viaduct-style room beneath the rest of the Jugendkulturhaus, in the Dynamo complex. It’s the perfect venue for a medium sized crowd to pack into the smaller space and really feel like the roof is coming off.

Hit after hit, chugging riffs, inescapable heaviness, breakdowns and groove. They surely put on an incredible show. OLD SCHOOL!!!

Jungle Rot‘s A Call to Arms was super cool live too – an incredible testament to a band who has been producing classic death and thrash metal for years, still producing classic hits today.

And an important side note: Dynamo is perfectly positioned on the river in Zurich – making it the perfect mid-summer venue.
