As Divine Sentence kicked things off on Wednesday night at Ebrietas, the message and the purpose of this evening was made crystal clear. And I quote – Go vegan, or go fuck yourself.
With a solid line-up of vegan-focused Metalcore the evening was a fundraising exercise for the local Lebenshof animal sanctuary. A logical pairing of vegan and straightedge artistry with an important institution in need of fundraising support.
In true underground fashion, we were indeed underground. Firmly planted in the vegan straight-edge scene, I felt somewhat out of place standing at the back of the cosy Ebrietas basement space, sipping my second and third pint of beer. If the mission of bands such as these – those who intertwine their musicianship with a strong message, who don’t shy away from bringing their message of equality, love and justice to the forefront of their art – is to inform and inspire others to think critically about their decisions, choices and behaviour, then they certainly succeeded in my case.
As a long standing vegetarian, why aren’t I vegan? Was I just there for the show, or am I aligning myself to something bigger? It’s a Wednesday night, why am I drinking so much beer?

The Ebrietas basement space is the perfect location for smaller scale, underground (literally) music discovery. It’s hot down there, but sounded great considering the tight underground cube layout.
Divine Sentence, Zurich/Bern locals, opened for the touring Moral Law (USA) and Time of Desperation (Sweden). A really high energy performance and great songs to boot. Intro captures so well the urgency and consequence Divine Sentence brings with all of their work.
Animal Liberation.
No more sacrifices.
For the benefit of the human race.
Rounding out with Silent Execution was a perfect way to again drive that message home.
Ain’t no such thing as humane slaughter.
It was also cool to be able to chat briefly with the singers of both Divine Sentence and Moral Law after their shows at the merch table. It’s so welcoming and inspiring to see artists pushing such a strong message whilst having so much humility and humanity.
Both Moral Law and Times of Desperation also put on incredible, high-energy shows. Despite the basement space we were in, Moral Law still managed to whip up a pit or two. And a couple of them also joined Times of Desperation ons stage for their finale as well.
Retribution was clearly a crowd favourite of their set.
I picked up a Moral Law cassette at this show. And a sweet benefit fanzine (pictured above), called Heartcore, curtesy of julias_ceasarsalad.

I’ll be keeping an eye out for further Divine Sentence touring later this year.
